Why Choose A Vorspin Hydrocyclone Separator?

What sets the VorSpin apart from standard hydrocyclone designs are three proprietary engineering improvements that measurably increase separation efficiency:

  • No moving parts — continuous operation with minimal maintenance
  • Centrifugal separation down to 7 microns
  • 304 stainless steel construction for corrosion resistance and hygienic applications
  • Manifoldable — multiple units can be combined on a unitized manifold to scale process flow rate
  • Wide industry and fluid compatibility
  • Available in stainless steel or urethane construction

How A Hydrocyclone Separator Works

A hydrocyclone separator uses the centrifugal separation principle to remove or classify suspended solids from a slurry. The incoming feed stream enters the hydrocyclone under pressure and is directed into a high-speed rotational path. Centrifugal force — significantly stronger than gravity — pushes denser solid particles outward toward the cone wall, where they migrate downward and exit through the apex (underflow) nozzle as a concentrated slurry. The clarified liquid forms a reverse vortex through the center and exits upward through the vortex finder as the overflow.

The Vorspin Difference — Three Engineering Improvements In Hydrocyclone Efficiency

The VorSpin Hydrocyclone Separator incorporates three proprietary design improvements that increase separation performance beyond standard hydrocyclone designs:

1. Volute Feed Inlet

The VorSpin’s volute feed inlet directs the incoming slurry tangentially into a smooth circular path, preventing it from circulating back into the path of incoming flow. Standard tangential inlets allow the new feed stream to collide with the circulating slurry, creating turbulence that reduces separation efficiency. The VorSpin’s volute geometry eliminates this — delivering cleaner separation at lower operating pressures.

2. Fluted Vortex Finder

The VorSpin’s uniquely fluted vortex finder increases momentum as the incoming slurry swirls around its decreasing cross-sectional area, accelerating solid particle separation more rapidly than a conventional cylindrical vortex finder. This geometry also prevents larger particles from “short-circuiting” out through the overflow with the clarified liquid — a common inefficiency in standard hydrocyclone designs.

3. Non-Plugging Apex Nozzle

The VorSpin’s apex nozzle is engineered specifically to prevent plugging at the solids discharge point — a critical failure mode in hydrocyclone separators operating with high-solids-concentration slurries. The non-plugging design ensures continuous, uninterrupted solids discharge and reduces the need for operator intervention.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hydrocyclone separator used for?

A hydrocyclone separator removes or classifies suspended solid particles — sand, silt, grit, scale — from a liquid stream without mechanical filters or screens. It is used across food and beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical, oil and gas, water treatment, and mining industries. With no moving parts and no filter media, it is one of the most efficient and low-maintenance solid-liquid separation technologies available for continuous industrial use.

How does a hydrocyclone separator work?

Pressurized slurry enters the hydrocyclone through a tangential inlet, creating a high-speed rotational flow. Centrifugal force pushes denser solid particles outward to the cone wall, where they exit through the apex nozzle as underflow. The clarified liquid forms a reverse inner vortex and exits upward through the vortex finder as overflow. The entire process is continuous and driven entirely by feed pressure — no moving parts required.

What silze hydrocyclone separator do I need?

Model selection is based on two factors: required process flow rate (GPM/LPM) and target particle separation size (microns). Smaller diameter units achieve finer separation at lower flow rates; larger units handle higher flow rates at a coarser cut. The 2″ C-HC-2-304 separates down to 7–10 microns at 5–15 GPM; the 6″ C-HC-6-304 achieves 15–18 microns at higher flow rates. For oversized flow requirements, multiple units can be manifolded together. Contact our team with your process parameters for a specific recommendation.

What is the difference between stainless steel and urethane VorSpin hydrocyclones?

The difference is the material of construction. Stainless steel (304 SS) models are ideal for corrosion resistance, hygienic processing (food, beverage, pharmaceutical), and chemical compatibility. Urethane models are built for high-abrasion applications — mining, drilling fluids, cement, and dredging — where abrasive particulates would wear stainless steel prematurely. Both incorporate the same three VorSpin design improvements: volute feed inlet, fluted vortex finder, and non-plugging apex nozzle.

Can VorSpin hydrocyclone separators be used in food, beverage, or pharmaceutical applications?

Yes. The 304 stainless steel construction supports CIP protocols, resists aggressive cleaning agents, and is compatible with hygienic processing standards. In pharmaceutical environments, the no-moving-parts design minimizes contamination risk and supports GMP compliance. Contact our engineering team if your application has specific material certifications or surface finish requirements.

What does “no moving parts” mean for hydrocyclone maintenance?

It means there are no impellers, shafts, bearings, or seals to wear out, lubricate, or replace. Separation is driven entirely by fluid dynamics, so the VorSpin operates continuously with minimal intervention. The result is lower total cost of ownership, higher uptime, and significantly reduced maintenance labor compared to mechanical or filter-based separation equipment.

Can multiple VorSpin hydrocyclones be connected together for higher flow rates?

Yes. Multiple units can be manifolded on a unitized manifold system that distributes equal pressure to each hydrocyclone, maintaining consistent separation efficiency at any flow rate. Systems can be scaled up simply by adding units to the manifold. Contact our team to discuss sizing and configuration for your application.
